Arden’s Healthcare Denial
I was unsuccessful after many days and endless hours of arguing to persuade United Healthcare to see that Arden’s needs were different then a person’s without type I diabetes. As it stands now they are refusing to cover her care. Many wonderful people have stepped up in the wake of this disgusting mess and offered suggestions on different paths for us to follow.
The chapter of the JDRF that we all support called me immediately after they heard what was happening to suggest that we ask our employer to contact United Healthcare on our behalf. If our employer agrees to pay the overages Arden can get the care she needs. This option is good in the short term for Arden but does not address the greedy and inhuman treatment that has been imposed on her. I’ve put the wheels in motion on this and will keep you updated. However, this does not sit well with me and I’m inclined to press on and make United do the right thing for Arden. I’d also be remiss if I didn’t try to effect policy for the other kids with type I that are saddled with United as their provider.
My Congressman’s office has offered to look into the matter with United Healthcare. Thanks to Lindsey for being so great! I’ll be sending the necessary information to them today. Hopefully this will help.
In the end Arden can’t wait for the appeals process and frankly I can’t see a clear path to United doing the right thing. So we have reluctantly forged a treatment plan with her dentist and endocrinologist that will allow allow us to treat her immediate needs in the dentist’s office. Instead of being sedated by an anesthesiologist, having her blood glucose monitored with a line ready to deliver glucose... we are going to give her nitrous oxide and I am going to stand by her side testing her blood glucose and blood ketones. This is less then optimal on many different fronts - too many to describe here but it stands now as are only and best choice.
Thanks for the many emails and phone calls I’ve gotten over the last few days. All of your support and words of encouragement are greatly appreciated!
Wish us luck... I’ll keep you updated.
